Five and Ten Designs is a collaborative effort by 5 indie sewing designers. They've put together a 150+ page ebook consisting of a collection of 10 pattern alterations based on one bodice pattern block. With plenty of instructions and photos to follow, you can create ten completely different looks. Get a little adventurous and use the pattern pieces included (front bodice, back bodice, cap sleeve, collar, and two types of pockets) to mix and match and sew something unique. The pattern comes in sizes 12 months to 10 years to keep you covered for years to come. The skill level ranges from beginner to intermediate and you'll be sure to learn something new. Price-wise it's a great deal at only $25 - works out to be $2.50 per outfit!
I was given the opportunity to check out the ebook and decided to whip up a version of Look 4 - one of the looks created by Elegance and Elephants. I made a couple of changes to the pattern - I shortened the bodice by several inches and made a top instead of a dress. I am seriously in love with the collar!! I knew when I got started on this project that I wanted the collar to be the focus point. I spotted this awesome rayon challis print by Joel Dewberry and had to have it. It is silky smooth and has a really nice drape. The print is rather large and bold so I knew that it needed to be paired with something on the neutral side. I had originally planned to go with a grey + silver pin dot knit fabric but it was no longer available so I had to go a different route. Instead of a knit, I went with a sheer heathered grey voile which is lined with a more opaque grey voile. To pull everything together, I used vintage mother of pearl-esque buttons and yellow thread for a little pop.
I ended up with a top for Syd that is both adorable and comfy. It is very flowy and will work equally well with leggings or jeans; on its own or under a cute cardigan. There are many more things I want to make using the Five and Ten Designs ebook!
